Weather Planning

Monday Weather:

Monday's weather looks very promising in terms of it not raining, we are planning to film from around 8am, so when looking at the weather it will be fairly cloudy, the fact that isnt not going to rain will help us to be able to move all the stuff into the location without any hassle however we weren't too concerned on the weather whilst were filming this bit as were all in the barn and will stay dry however the weather decides to go.

Once we have shot all the performance material we will hopefully move straight onto filming some of the narrative, but looking at the weather it will be even better and sunnier mid-day, this will give us a really nice happy feel to the most part of our narrative where we want it to be.

Tuesday Weather:

Tuesday's weather isn't brilliant, however I believe this wont cause us too much hassle as we are looking to film at night at a firework/bonfire night in a local village for the last part of our narrative, looking at the weather it just look like it will be a dry night, this is what we are hoping for as it will give us difficulties when filming if it is raining.

Narrative Changes

After having another group meeting, we have decided to alter the narrative to fit more with the location we have chose, this is because we feel it will be more of an effective video and we will be able to film more of our production in one location.

We have came up with the narrative being along the same lines as our original narrative which is the couple being together and having a really close reltionship and then they start to argue and it then ends in them fighting and breaking up, the male character then goes into the woods which they walked in and buries the memories of the relationship in a small box.

This we feel will gives us a very strong narrative and will help the story in the video link with the lyrics about digging a hole and burying their feelings.

New Location - Pickworth

After speaking with a friend, I have been able to secure a barn to use for our video, this barn is in Pickworth, although this is a bit further than our other location, it is still within a resonable distance.

This barn location owned by the farmer is a large barn which has a shutter for a door, this isnt what we were looking for, however, it will shut out all the light, this means we can film in the day and just use our lights, this will help to show any continuity errors with lighting.

This location is also next to a wood, this has meant that we wanted to look more into our narrative and use the resources we are given on the location.

Group Meeting - Location

We have had to have a group meeting as our location that we were planning on using on the outskirts of Bourne has fallen through, we have discussed other possible locations but we feel we should stay along the same type of building, I have contacted a friend who works for a farmer and we hope he will come back to us with good news about being able to use one of his barns, this means we will have a location of the same type, if not better.

Once we have confirmation of a location to film our band shots on, we can then think about our narrative more in depth and whether it will be best to alter it to fit to this new location.

Try Out Shot - Burning Photo

Below I have done two tester shots of me burning a picture of a couple, this is something we wanted to incorporate at the end of our video so I have done the first one using a lighter and the second using a match, this will give me a good feel of which works the best and will look the best in the video.

This first video was with the lighter, this worked well and burnt just on the ladies face and then burnt outwards from there, this is an effective look, however maybe in the video we should use a vintage lighter to go with the old feel.

This second clip was filmed using a match, this could work well at giving the old feel as you would have to strike the match. The match burnt well, however it burnt more as a spread and not direct on the woman's face, this could still work in our video.

I think overall the lighter worked best for having more of a direct burn and will look effective with an old style lighter, we just need to be careful on how the flame effects the light sensitivity on the camera, so this shot may take some perfecting when shooting it.

Laser Lighting Idea

After watching the video for 'Earth Medicine' By 'We Are Fiction' we all liked the creative lighting used in the live shots with the use of warm back lighting and the use of a laser to add some color and creativity to the shots. The use of lasers in this genre is not very conventional as the music videos are usually created very low budget in small venues where the lighting is very basic and more natural with not many gobos, effects, or colors; however we feel that the use of it in this video creates a unique and memorable effect that works well with the live shots, and helping them keep interesting.

We are going to try and create a similar effect with the lighting equipment we have already arranged to borrow and use from various people but after taken influence from this video we have decided to use a 4 Lens Laser light owned by me along with the previous lighting to attempt to create a similar effect from this video. In order for this to work we will need a smokey atmosphere at the right density so that we can still get clear shots whilst still enhancing the lighting and laser effects.
Below is a picture of the laser light we intend to use and a video of it in action in a smokey atmosphere.

Costume Planning

For our costume we wanted to keep it very stereotypical of a hardcore video, so for our video we have chosen to have a very basic costume design, we have chosen just a simple t-shirt (maybe a band shirt if possible) and then some casual jeans and trainers, this means the actors have a very simple look to them, focusing on the video and what is going on more than the clothes.

I have taken a few screenshots from other hardcore music video to show how we have taken influence from them to get our choice of clothing.

Prop Planning

Instruments
The Sechter Omen 8 string guitar is the instrument that our track was recorded with and is the instrument that will feature within the video. This guitar looks very attractive and is very large due to having 8 strings rather than the conventional 5, so fits very well into our heavier genre as it produces a much meatier sound.

The bass guitar we will use is a Washburn T24 bass owned by Ben Thorogood who has given permission for actor Harry Thornburn to use during the performance shots in his role of bassist.

We will use a Perl Drum Kit also owned by Ben Thorogood who will also be acting as the drummer in our live shots. The same kit setup will be used as when the track was recorded to ensure instrument syncing is as accurate as possible.

We will also be using a Peavey and an Ashdown guitar amplifier owned by Charlie Green and Harry Thornburn who have agreed to let us use their large amplifiers that will fit in very well to our genre and will enable our live shots to look realistic to a gig style setup.

Microphone, Cables & Stand
Matthew Jones is going to bring two cheap dynamic microphone's similar to what would be seen at a gig, along with cables and a stand so our live shots look as close to a real gig as possible with everything looking in operation for real rather than looking like a simple prop.

Email - Leicester Location

Above is a screenshot from an email we sent to the GEC Whetsone Engineering Plant in Leicester, this picture shows how we emailed the owners of the land and we have found that we will not be allowed to film on this location, this means we will have to look into our other ideas of locations.

Equipment Planning

4 X PARcans & Controller
I have spoken to Matthew Bostock who owns 4 X PARcans & a controller along with tripods to request if we can borrow this equipment for our production. He is allowing us to use his lighting equipment which will be very useful to gain some great effects especially when filming the live performance shots of our band playing.
From my knowledge of lighting I am aware that PARcans give a very wide spread of light and will be used when the whole stage needs to be light, it is also possible I will use them close up as an up-lighting effect to certain features.

Goal Post / T-Bar Lighting Truss

I own a heavy duty Goal Post / T-bar lighting truss that we will use for securing some of the lighting. This truss either can be used as a full lighting bar or as two T-bars which will allow us more flexibility when positioning the lights for our live performance shots to ensure that they are well light with an effective style.

Generator
As some of our possible locations such as 'The Barn' will possibly not contain a mains power supply we have looked into renting a generator. We will certainly require some form of power when filming mainly due to the lighting equipment we plan to use to create a professional looking music video; it is also possible we will need power for special effects such as smoke machines and possibly to power up some of the props to make the video look realistic. Below is the conversation between the contact who is able to rent us the generator and a picture of a similar model & size generator.

Smoke
I own two medium size smoke machines with dense fog fluid that should linger in the air for a reasonable amount of time. It is possible we will use these for our live performance shots to create a more 'gig' like atmosphere along with supporting the lighting in creating a conventional effect.
Profile's & Other Lighting
I have spoken to a few different people about possibly borrowing some profile lights and some extra PARcans / Fresnel's and a dimmer pack which will allow certain characters or instruments to be highlighted in the video with this type of lighting as it has a very narrow and changeable beam of light rather than the PARcan's standard wide wash. These would simply allow us to create better lighting effects within our video rather than a simple 'Lights on / lights off' scenario. The dimmer pack will be required to power and control these types of stage lighting.

Dimmer Pack
Ipod Dock
I own a simple iPod dock at home which can be powered via mains or batteries which we will use to play the track back whilst recording all parts of our video that need either instrument or lip syncing so that we can ensure it is exactly on time with our actual track. This is the same iPod dock and technique as used in our preliminary and as the result was good we have decided to stick with the same method.
Camera/Tripods
A Canon 550D with a 50mm lens will be used as our main camera for the live performance shots. This camera is an 18 mega pixel digital SLR camera which will offer us recording in full HD 1080p movies. After using this camera in our preliminary task we are very comfortable with the quality of the recording and know its capabilities. The 50mm lens we have chosen to use for this camera is in order to create good point of view shots due to the fact a 50mm lens has a field of vision very close to the human eye. This will make viewers feel like they are stood in front of this live performance and make it more of a realistic POV shot.

We will use a Canon 500D with a 15-85mm lens for our secondary camera in the live performance. Reason for this being that it is similar to the 550D in the fact that it still offers full HD recording and will gain us shots that aren't noticeably different from the shots from the 550D. Having a second camera will also enable us to gain more shots when recording which will cut together better than having to record different shots on a different take. By using a different lens for our secondary camera it will allow us to gain a little more variation within our shots to keep them interesting.

The Canon 7D with a 10-11mm lens will be used to record our narrative. This camera also is able to record in full HD and is excellent for shots where the lighting will vary due to the fact it can cope with all lighting conditions. Another main reason behind the use of this camera is that it is weather and dust proof meaning that if the narrative requires certain shots outdoors in poor weather conditions for effect, these can be taken easily without risk of ruining equipment or having to shield it.

Whilst shooting both the narrative and the live performance we will use various tripods and mechanisms to get some interesting shots along with a Glidecam 2000HD which will allow us to do walking tracking shots on all terrain without camera shake in the shot.

Location Research

The first location we looked at was an abandoned building in Leicester; GEC Whetsone is an old engineering plant that used to test early jet engines, it was opened in 1941 and has been constantly used from then on for different things, this has made the building even better as its clearly obvious that the building is run down and over used even before they closed it down in the late 1950’s, now it is closed down it has become wrecked and broken, this is also a very conventional building for us to use for our video.

The second location we have looked at is a barn on the outskirts of Bourne, if we were able to use a barn it would give us a really nice look to a video, this inspiration has come from a music video called ‘Death Toll’ by While She Sleeps, they used a very dark room with a dusty environment, if this is something we can replicate in the barn I think it will be extremely effective. The use of this location means that we are very close to home and can easily go back and get anything we need for the shoot very quickly, making our shooting day more productive.

For our last location, we have thought about using an open, empty factory, we feel this location will be a good set for our music video as it’s something we have seen been used in other hard-core music videos and gives a really nice feel to the video as it gives it more of a large and enhanced feel. The lighting in this location will be easier to manage as we would not have to have any form of electric as we can go off the mains in the building.

Media Pitch + Feedback

Bronwyn:
Good intro. I like the song title.

Song – I thought the music creation and lyrics (even though I couldn’t make out some of them) sounds good and definitely has good potential. Just saying.

Ideas
Barn – it’s a really good narrative idea- I think it will work well, could work… depending on the pace of the editing, slow paced editing wouldn’t suit your genre –you probably would anyway

Engineering plant – not sure it would be as effective.

Warner’s Printing – relative and what I would expect, go for something a bit different to make it

James Craig:
Presentation -
Good presentation
Understanding is good as they are talking about their own band
Original

Idea Opinions -
The ‘even feel’ is good
Like the narrative
Interesting ideas for effects
Prefer the Leicester locations as it seems more conventional and more interesting.
Possibly combine the first idea (as your storyline) and the second location as your performance scenes?
Track Opinions -
Interesting Track
Hard to understand the lyrics!
Matthew Bostock:
-          Interesting Track
-          Nice presentation style
-          Like idea 1 – utilises conventions of the genre well
-          Location 3 suits the genre well – would be ideal setting for the video
  • From all of our peers feedback, I feel that they really enjoyed the sound of our first idea, however, feel that maybe using an abandoned building will alow it to be different and appealing.
  • Everyone seemed to enjoy the song but find it hard to pick out the lyrics so a strong narrative seems the way to go.

Audience Research

Prezi Posted By Dan Harris:
http://danharrisadvancedproduction.blogspot.co.uk/

After looking through the results we gathered from our questionnaire, we have found that more people tend to watch music videos on their laptops than any other device and it was 50/50 on the narrative and performance as we had an equal amount answered for which they prefer to dominate in the video.

From our genre specific questionnaire we found that everyone we asked liked to see a narrative running alongside the performance in the video and everyone said that our genre would only suit fast paced editing, this are factors we will use in our video to give us the best video possible.
